Ce cours se présente comme une initiation aux grandes évolutions politiques, sociales et culturelles des États-Unis et de l'Amérique Latine, de l'Indépendance des États-Unis à la Révolution cubaine et au Civil Rights Movement. Parmi les thèmes abordés figureront, entre autres : les indépendances nationales, la montée de l'impérialisme étasunien, l'esclavage et la société d'après l'abolition, la marginalisation et l'élimination des populations amérindiennes, les immigrations et la construction de l'État-nation dans des sociétés multi-raciales et multi-ethniques.
