Financial markets have begun to exert a more direct and sometimes dominant influence on the real economy. Complex financial products, speculative investment strategies and increased global integration of financial markets have created an environment where fluctuations in financial markets can have immediate and profound repercussions on the global economy, independently of traditional economic indicators.
