Multilateral diplomacy and international organizations

De Baripedia

This course focuses on the history of attempts to establish lasting peace through international organization. These attempts are not limited to suggested solutions to security problems, but also include responses to social and economic challenges, humanitarian crises and crimes against humanity in a world where political power remains essentially in the hands of States. While trying to situate the League of Nations and the United Nations in historical contexts, we will observe the role played by civil society, international administration and governments at key moments in the history of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. At the same time, we will look at the evolution of the structure, competencies and decision-making mechanisms of these organizations in order to better understand their failures, crises and outcomes. The course is accompanied by a seminar that offers analysis and interpretation work and serves to deepen methodical knowledge and skills.
