Lui Gang stated he discovered it in 2005 but it is disputed as a possible forgery. (Anachronisms are the most important indicator why this would be a forgery: the map closely resembles 16th-18th century European maps, especially in the shape of the Americas. If this were authentic from 1418, Zheng He would have explored both sides of the isthmus of Panama and the Caribbean, and likely the Northeastern American coasts and the European seas as well. The map suffers from common errors by European cartographers: Island of California, open polar passages. The map also includes intricate details of Italy and the major rivers of West Africa, dissimilar in style to known Chinese maps of that era. The map also displays Bering Strait, Greenland, Australia and Antartica; but no unknown landmasses.)
