This course aims to provide the keys to understanding the history of the contemporary Middle East, the political transformations of the region, and the issues and debates that characterize it. It will begin by presenting the decline and territorial losses of the Ottoman Empire and Qajar Iran. It will discuss the responses to the decline and their consequences for states and societies in both cases, and then examine the consequences of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the creation of new national borders and identities. It will also analyze authoritarian modernization in Iran and Turkey, Western-supervised modernization in the mandates and in Egypt, and attempts to overcome the post-Ottoman order through Arab or Muslim unity. It will also examine the emergence and evolution of pan-Arabism and political Islamism and their consequences on states and nations in the Middle East.<ref>https://wadme.unige.ch:3349/pls/opprg/w_det_cours.debut?p_code_cours=J4M200&p_plan_is=0&p_langue=1&p_frame=N&p_mode=PGC&p_annee=2019&p_suffixe=&p_grtri=</ref>
