	~~The main objective of this course is to encourage a critical analysis of past and present forms of organized violence~~. ~~While studies on peace and conflict have traditionally focused mainly on the statistical dimension of the construction of~~ "~~armed conflicts~~" (~~analysed from databases~~), ~~this course focuses on the sociohistorical construction of war and security~~. ~~To do this, teaching will be divided into two parts~~.		Pagrindinis šio kurso tikslas - paskatinti kritiškai analizuoti praeities ir dabartines organizuoto smurto formas. Nors taikos ir konfliktų tyrimuose tradiciškai daugiausia dėmesio skiriama statistiniam "ginkluotų konfliktų" konstravimo aspektui (analizuojamam iš duomenų bazių), šiame kurse dėmesys sutelkiamas į socioistorinį karo ir saugumo konstravimą. Šiuo tikslu mokymas bus suskirstytas į dvi dalis.

	~~First of all, it will analyse historical contingencies and the~~ "~~conditions of possibility~~" ~~of organised violence and war~~. This is in order to understand the historical variations at the macrosociological level of the practice of warfare and the process that has led in the West since the end of the Middle Ages to the state monopoly of violence. ~~The central issue here will be to grasp the implications of the practice of war as a condition for the constitution of modern European states~~. ~~The issues that will emerge from this section will touch on war as the sole prerogative of the state and the implications of applying this understanding of organized violence in non-Western contexts~~.		Pirmiausia bus analizuojami istoriniai atsitiktinumai ir organizuoto smurto bei karo "galimybės sąlygos". Taip siekiama suprasti karo praktikos istorinius pokyčius makrosociologiniu lygmeniu ir procesą, kuris nuo viduramžių pabaigos Vakaruose atvedė prie valstybės smurto monopolio. Pagrindinis klausimas čia bus suvokti karo praktikos, kaip šiuolaikinių Europos valstybių konstitucijos sąlygos, pasekmes. Šioje dalyje bus paliesti klausimai, susiję su karu kaip vienintele valstybės prerogatyva ir tokio organizuoto smurto supratimo taikymo pasekmėmis nevakarietiškame kontekste.

	~~The second part of the course focuses on the challenges of professionalizing security~~. ~~A phenomenon made possible by the growing bureaucratization of Western states~~, ~~it will involve analysing the practices of security professionals~~ (~~military~~, ~~police~~, ~~private military companies~~, ~~intelligence services, etc~~.). ~~While maintaining a historical approach~~, ~~this dive into the~~ "~~world~~" ~~of security professionals will take place at the microsociological level~~. ~~This section will be structured around questions related to the constitution of these professions in relation to the state and the possibility of security and political violence in a globalised world~~.		Antroje kurso dalyje daugiausia dėmesio skiriama saugumo profesionalizavimo iššūkiams. Tai reiškinys, kurį paskatino vis didėjanti Vakarų valstybių biurokratizacija, todėl bus analizuojama saugumo specialistų (kariuomenės, policijos, privačių karinių bendrovių, žvalgybos tarnybų ir kt.) praktika. Išlaikant istorinį požiūrį, šis pasinėrimas į saugumo profesionalų "pasaulį" vyks mikrosociologiniu lygmeniu. Šioje dalyje bus nagrinėjami klausimai, susiję su šių profesijų konstitucija valstybės atžvilgiu ir saugumo bei politinio smurto galimybėmis globalizuotame pasaulyje.

Šios dvi dalys grindžiamos istorine valstybės sociologija, daug dėmesio skiriant Makso Vėberio (Max Weber), Norberto Eliaso (Norbert Elias), Šarlio Tilio (Charles Tilly) ir Pjero Burdju (Pierre Bourdieu) darbams. Istorinė valstybės sociologija siekia į istoriją žvelgti ne kaip į duomenų gavybos įmonę, bet kaip į dabarties problematizavimo būdą.

The main objective of this course is to encourage a critical analysis of past and present forms of organized violence. While studies on peace and conflict have traditionally focused mainly on the statistical dimension of the construction of "armed conflicts" (analysed from databases), this course focuses on the sociohistorical construction of war and security. To do this, teaching will be divided into two parts.

First of all, it will analyse historical contingencies and the "conditions of possibility" of organised violence and war. This is in order to understand the historical variations at the macrosociological level of the practice of warfare and the process that has led in the West since the end of the Middle Ages to the state monopoly of violence. The central issue here will be to grasp the implications of the practice of war as a condition for the constitution of modern European states. The issues that will emerge from this section will touch on war as the sole prerogative of the state and the implications of applying this understanding of organized violence in non-Western contexts.

The second part of the course focuses on the challenges of professionalizing security. A phenomenon made possible by the growing bureaucratization of Western states, it will involve analysing the practices of security professionals (military, police, private military companies, intelligence services, etc.). While maintaining a historical approach, this dive into the "world" of security professionals will take place at the microsociological level. This section will be structured around questions related to the constitution of these professions in relation to the state and the possibility of security and political violence in a globalised world.

The two parts are based on the historical sociology of the State, drawing heavily on the work of Max Weber, Norbert Elias, Charles Tilly and Pierre Bourdieu. The historical sociology of the State aims to approach history not as a data mining enterprise, but as a way of problematizing the present.
